1、Best-selling Xinyintai New Energy Market
2. Early admission and fame are advantages.
3、The matrix of pure electric vehicles is getting richer and richer.
In 2024, more and more China new energy vehicle companies will go to sea in Southeast Asia, and increase the layout of the Southeast Asian market. For example, Xpeng Motors and Krypton, which are aiming at the mid-to-high-end pure electricity market, have appeared in Singapore one after another, and the Thai factories of BYD and GAC Ai ‘an have also been officially completed and put into production, while Nezha and Wuling continue to list new models in Southeast Asia.
Among such a large number of players, SAIC MG is very "low-key". But in fact, the development momentum of SAIC MG new energy in Southeast Asia is very rapid, even from ordinary pure electric vehicles to rolling to pure electric sports car tracks.
Best-selling Xinyintai New Energy Market
Thailand’s AUTOLIFE THAILAND announced the registration number of pure electric vehicles in Thailand from January to July 2024. The new energy vehicles with the registration number of Top 5 are: BYD Dolphin, BYD Seal,BYD Atto 3、NETA V, and MG 4 ELECTRIC. Among them, MG 4 ELECTRIC is the main global model of MG. In addition, MG also launched four electric vehicles in Thailand, such as MG EP, MG Maxus 9, MG ZS EV and MG ES.
According to the data from January to July, 2024, the registered number of these five new energy vehicles of MG in Thailand has reached 6,104, accounting for about 14.06% of the registered number of pure electric vehicles.Among them, MG 4 ELECTRIC and MG EP are the most popular models, accounting for 8.89% and 2.89% respectively.
In the Indonesian market, MG’s new energy offensive is also good. According to the automobile sales data released by GAIKINDO of Indonesia Automobile Association from January to June, 2024, the sales volume of MG pure electric vehicles in the first half of the year was close to 1,500, second only to the sales volume of pure electric vehicles of Wuling (about 6,210 vehicles) and Chery (2,642 vehicles). It is worth noting that,From January to June, 2024, the overall sales volume of Indonesian MG increased by more than 280% compared with the same period of last year, and the growth momentum was rapid.
Comparatively speaking, the number of MG pure electric vehicles in Singapore is much lower than that in Thailand and Indonesia, but it is still better than China’s new energy brands such as Chery, Great Wall and Guangzhou Automobile Ai ‘an. According to the car registration data of Singapore in the first half of 2024 released by the Land Transport Bureau of Singapore (LTA), the number of registered pure electric vehicles of BYD is 2,587, that of SAIC MG is 275, that of Great Wall Motor is 88, that of GAC Ai ‘an is 46 and that of Chery is 18.
Overall, the market share of SAIC MG new energy vehicles can reach Top 5 in Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore.
Early admission and early fame are advantages.
Compared with other new energy vehicle companies in China, MG has the advantage of early admission and early fame.
Before becoming a MG of SAIC, MG was originally a British automobile brand founded in 1924. In 2007, SAIC acquired MG and officially entered the Thai market in 2014. First, it launched fuel vehicles, and then launched a variety of new energy vehicles. Prior to this, SAIC also set up a joint venture with Zhengda Group, a well-known local Thai company, in 2012. It can be said that SAIC Group also laid out the sea in Southeast Asia very early, paving the way for MG’s new energy strategy in advance.
Before it was renamed as SAIC MG, MG’s traditional oil car model had already sold well all over the world and enjoyed high popularity in overseas markets. Among them, the Thai royal family is also a loyal fan of MG.Many Thais position MG as a high-end car brand. In this way, it is easier for SAIC MG to open the new energy market in Southeast Asia.
Like many new energy car companies in China, MG pays more attention to the layout of the Thai market, and takes it as the center to expand the Southeast Asian market. In May, 2024, the media reported that SAIC MG’s investment in Thai factories had reached 30 billion baht (about 850 million US dollars). The factory has also introduced a production line of electric vehicles, the first model of which is a local version of MG 4 ELECTRIC. In addition, SAIC has established the first battery production facility for electric vehicles in ASEAN region in Thailand, named HASCO-CP BATTERY SHOP. Each battery workshop can assemble 50,000 Cell-To-Pack batteries every year to meet the demand of electric vehicles in Thailand and Southeast Asian countries.
The matrix of pure electric vehicles is getting richer and richer.
In addition to increasing its investment in Thailand, SAIC officially launched the MG brand in Malaysia in April this year, and displayed the MG 4 ELECTRIC and MG ZS EV models. These two models are also MG’s main new energy vehicles in the Indonesian market.
Among them,MG 4 ELECTRIC is a global electric vehicle model of MG.The latest global delivery volume exceeds 180,000 vehicles. SAIC said that in 2025, MG 4 ELECTRIC will become the first global car with cumulative sales exceeding "500,000 vehicles" in China. The MG ZS EV is an SUV tram model owned by MG, which can be used to benchmark Chery’s Omoda E5 and BYD’s BYD Atto 3.
Compared with the peers who mainly promote 1~2 new energy vehicles, MG’s vehicle matrix in Thailand is obviously richer. For example, MG Maxus 9, a seven-seat pure electric MPV model, is launched in Thailand to challenge Toyota. In March this year, MG launched the second luxury electric MPV model MG Maxus 7 at Bangkok International Auto Show in Thailand, further competing for the pure electric MPV market. The most concerned thing is that the pure electric coupe model of MG has also been officially listed in Thailand. It marks that the Thai sports car has also opened the era of electrification. From pure electric cars, pure electric SUVs, pure electric MPVs to pure electric sports cars, MG’s new energy ambitions in Southeast Asia are not small.
Although MG Cyberster has gained thousands of awards shortly after its listing, it is still unknown whether it is a good time to start laying out pure electric sports cars at this stage. After all, the consumption level and the acceptance of electric vehicles in Thailand still need to be improved. Focusing on multi-matrix SAIC MG will bring different models to China new energy vehicle enterprises?
