Asian drum king, he not only personally experienced the death of Ka Kui Wong, but also witnessed the 26 years of Chinese rock and roll.

I have to say that there are too many big immortals in Japan. But if you want to popularize science, the first thing that Gunjun thinks of is not a big-name band, but the "strange millet" Funky Ji who has been hanging out in China all the year round.

Funky is a respected drummer. Gunjun believes that many friends have seen his drum skills.

He and Xu Wei have collaborated on many works, and he played the drums for albums such as Time Walking and Every Moment is Brand-new.

Funky used to be a drummer in Xu Wei’s most classic concert "Out of Print Youth" in 2005. The most impressive thing is that he and Gu Saner fought the live drum skills in Zhang Yongguang.

Funky and the third son of the drum played the drums on the spot. After that, Li Yanliang’s guitar entered, and Xu Wei’s singing came one after another. The song he sang was "Elsewhere"

In addition to the awesome drum skills, Gunjun also wants to say that Funky is probably the foreigner who knows Chinese rock music best.

He was born in Japan, and has been practicing drums for more than 40 years since 1974. Drums occupy nearly two-thirds of his life.

Storm band

In 1981, he formed the Slamp (Storm) band and made his mark in the Japanese rock circle. In 1989, he traveled to Chinese mainland for the first time and fell in love with China’s culture, life and buddies.

At the same time, China’s rock music attracted him. It was the Panther, the Tang Dynasty or the underground band. He also saw the wildness and passion of Chinese rock in the underground bar, and at the same time met a large group of young people who loved music. Later, he traveled back and forth to China and Japan many times.

Funky said: "In Beijing in 1990, there were no young people with long hair on the streets, and there were limited places to play rock and roll. In this context, I happened to see Black Panther band’s performance and was deeply infected by their enthusiasm for rock and roll. " .

Besides the old rock guns in the mainland, the most famous Chinese rocker who made friends with Funky is Beyond.

In 1992, Beyond decided to go to Japan for development because "Hong Kong only has entertainment circle but no music circle", and the brokerage company it signed was Funky’s Storm Band.

The first good friend Ka Kui Wong and Ye Shirong met in Japan was Funky.

Because Beyond is new here in Japan and can’t speak Japanese, they can speak fluent Cantonese and some poor Mandarin, and Funky is trying to learn Mandarin because of his love for China.

"When we first met, they opened their eyes and found that my Chinese was even more fluent than theirs. With this, our distance suddenly narrowed a lot."

On another interview program, Funky told the story of him and Beyond through telephone connection, and Jia Kui died …

I’m afraid Funky still remembers the story of Ka Kui Wong’s death in an accident on a Japanese program. He once serialized several issues of his story with Beyond in Kochi News in Japan, in which he described in detail the scene of Ka Kui’s death.

Through words, we can already feel the tension, powerlessness, sadness and helplessness at that time … …

On the evening of June 24th, 1993, drummer Ye Shirong called, and just listening to his voice, he knew that he had lost his hands and feet.

"Ka Kui Wong had an accident, fell off the stage, recorded a program, and was in a coma, Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital."

One of us, whose mother tongue is Cantonese, has only taught himself Chinese for more than a year, and the conversation is at this level, but this information is enough to make my brain feel dizzy. Hurry up and call the company to find out the news, saying that it is an entertainment program of Fuji TV, "Let’s do whatever you want in Neicun and Nanyuan!" In the recording, Ka Kui Wong, the lead singer, and Uchimura, one of the hosts, fell off the stage together. Uchimura was not in danger, but Ka Kui Wong was unconscious.

An ominous thought surged up. In Hong Kong, Beyond played rock and roll, and at the same time, it finally won its position today by actively appearing in various entertainment programs. For by going up one flight of stairs, the band came to Japan, but in the end, if something happened in an entertainment program in Japan, how could it be accepted?

The taxi took me to the hospital full of anxiety.

The patient refused the face-to-face meeting, and BEYOND, who was waiting outside the ward, looked anxious and at a loss. What’s the situation? The attending doctor popped up a series of unfamiliar medical terms, such as acute subdural hemorrhage, skull fracture, brain contusion, and the layman’s first reaction was that he was still alive after such a heavy injury.

"Never let him die, I will never let him die!"

As Funky said in the video above, the situation of Jiakui has reached the point where there is no way. If surgery can’t solve it, in order to save people, we can only try our best, whether it is using Chinese medicine or praying to the Buddha.

Black Leopard

Funky mentioned in his article that when he was looking for Chinese medicine all over the world, he contacted Black Panther band, a good friend of Beijing.

At that time, Panther was already popular all over the country, and Dou Wei had already left Panther, with keyboard player Luan Shu as the lead singer. At that time, Black Panther band concert also allowed some audiences to stand up and wave.

"Help get Angong Niuhuang Pills!"

On the one hand, I begged Luan Shu, on the other hand, I kept the news from the firm and gave it to the Hong Kong media waiting around the hospital. I know this news will appear in the headlines of entertainment pages in Hongkong and Taiwan Province the next day.

Unsurprisingly, Chinese mainland, Hongkong, Taiwan Province, and all Chinese began to look around for this kind of cheap Chinese medicine to save KOMA’s life. However, all medicines sent to Japan by mail were confiscated by the customs because they contained ingredients that were in conflict with the Japanese drug law. Very not easy to have smuggled in, collected from the Chinese circle living in Japan, can be sent to the hospital, but no doctor dares to use it. How dare Japanese doctors use drugs that are not recognized by the Drug Law for patients? The life-saving "straw" in the hands of Chinese people all over the world was left behind on the shore before it was delivered to me.

I feel a deep sense of despair about Japan.

… …

At 4: 15 pm on June 30, 1993, a young life that no one can replace in Chinese rock and roll circles quietly passed away in a foreign land where no one knew him.

Ka Kui Wong’s death, let Funky really see the Japanese environment, where celebrities will be offered as gods, but without names, there will be no value. Even Beyond, which is already famous in Chinese areas, is full of powerlessness in Japan, where no one knows it.

When he was tired of the rigidity and ruthlessness of Japanese "entertainment circle", Funky thought of going to China and Beijing to play music, because there were a group of buddies who insisted on playing rock and roll no matter how suppressed they were, and then they became closer and closer to Chinese rock and roll.

In 1996, led by Funky, he released the album "Drum Soul in Asia" in cooperation with famous rockers such as Black Panther band guitarist thomas lee, former lead singer Luan Shu, Tang Dynasty guitarist Laowu, Cui Jian band bassist Liu Junli, Face band bassist Ouyang, Beyond band guitarist Paul Wong and so on, which is called the music temple of Asians.

Among them, this performance "Memories" was created by Funky in memory of Ka Kui Wong. Simple and imposing piano, bass, zither and erhu reveal sadness and nostalgia for Ka Kui in silence.

After that, he lived in China, cooperated with many famous singers and independent musicians, played drums, arranged music and made music for them, and was active on various stages.

Since he first came into contact with Chinese rock music in 1990, in the past 26 years, Funky has grown old with the most energetic and enthusiastic young people in China, and witnessed the rise and fall and development of Chinese rock music.

He said that he realized his dream in China. He didn’t play music for success and fame, but "became a god-like existence like people in records".

"When I first listened to rock music with vinyl records, I felt that the people playing on the other side of the stereo were like gods, and I wanted to be like them ‘ God ’ . In China, when the children in China heard the music I recorded, they said excitedly ‘ It’s the first time to hear such a great drum ’ At that time, my dream came true instantly. "

Today, Funky, who is nearly 60 years old, still likes to play drums and make music in China, and regards himself as a Chinese. In fact, he has long been Chinese. He once said that "only China can complete the music of China". Funky clearly remembers that when recording Xu Wei’s Time Walk in 2003, he felt "he became Chinese".

Because he is not only familiar with China’s history, culture, customs, but also participated in some crazy stories and experiences that only China people can have, and this is also his story.

Funky is wearing Grandpa Mao’s T-shirt at the scene of "Out of Print Youth" in Xu Wei.

If you want to ask him, why don’t you want to leave after staying in China and Beijing for so long?

I think his answer must be: because here, there are my buddies!
